Each year, Ballinger Equine offers a limited number of EMS placement opportunities to veterinary undergraduates who are studying at UK schools of veterinary medicine. The one and two-week placements are available to those students who wish to pursue a career practicing equine veterinary medicine in the UK.
The placements are managed by the practice managing director and clinical supervision and mentoring is provided by the clinical director.
Students may expect an intensive, immersive experience in all aspects of first-opinion, ambulatory equine veterinary medicine in a busy, well-equipped, independent practice.
EMS placements with Ballinger Equine are highly valued and selection is rigorous. Students should ensure their emailed application together with an up-to-date CV is addressed to the practice managing director and is received between 1 August and 30 November in the year immediately preceding the one in which the placement is sought. Preferred dates should be indicated.
Eligibility is open to those undergraduates currently studying at a UK school of veterinary medicine. The placements are offered in association with the students’ university EMS supervisory teams. Students may be considered for a placement if they are experienced, confident and physically capable of handling horses and ponies. Applicants must also demonstrate a specific interest in a career practicing equine veterinary medicine within the UK.
Students on an EMS placement with Ballinger Equine will accompany members of the clinical team on scheduled patient visits. They may expect to have their knowledge tested and learned practical skills will be applied under direct close supervision. There is always opportunity to discuss the realities of life working in a busy, independent, first-opinion practice.
Regrettably Ballinger Equine is not in a position to offer or arrange accommodation for visiting EMS students. The practice office is in a rural location which is not served by public transport. Students will need to make their own transport arrangements noting that they are required to be at the office each morning by 0800hrs. There is ample secure on-site parking. The nature of first-opinion veterinary medicine means that finish times are subject to variation each day.
